Fire Island Pines - “Oh Therese”

Vulpiano Records-affiliated UK artist Fire Island Pines has put out a lovely new EP, Rickie Lee Jones. Still abounding with jangle pop fun, although at turns seemingly more somber than previous release Bratislava, Rickie Lee Jones is quite an enjoyable listen. I found myself putting this on repeat as I went about my otherwise overwhelming school day and found myself smiley and feeling refreshed - quite the compliment to FIP since 17 units hasn’t left me with an abundance of good cheer and refreshment lately! Highly recommended.

Rickie Lee Jones is the second release by indie pop band Fire Island Pines from Cornwall, UK. Since their debut EP Bratislava appeared last spring as a free download, the sextet have been winning people over with their “indie roots mixed with a strong pop sensibility” and their “arresting amalgamation of jangly guitars and persistent trumpet”.

Last autumn achingly cool DIY indie label Art is Hard Records included them on a compilation album featuring the hottest new indie music from the South West. They were picked up by Bethan Elfyn’s “Amazing Radio” show and featured on blogs and podcasts from around the world including the coveted Brip.fm playlist. Guardian-rated blog Sweeping the Nation described them as clearly knowing “their Smiths, Pulp and Felt” but more accurately recalling “the sophisticatedly literate melodrama sub-genre that briefly thrived in the late 90s… it’s a long time since we’ve had a band that sounded like that.”

“Rickie Lee Jones” is a four track EP available in both digital format and as ltd edition 7” vinyl EP and postcard from Bandcamp (fireislandpines.bandcamp.com), all major digital music stores and selected record Shops in London and the South West for around £2. The postcard includes details of how to download the MP3s for your iPod too!
