And the lists begin…

Marilyn posted the top albums and singles from Last.fm users a few hours ago, and as she pointed out, there were some noticeable differences between the things we chose and what Last.fm users as a whole are into. I’m not surprised at the lack of love for Deerhunter, because the fabulous Microcastle is only a month old, but I was rather hoping to see a bit more No Age and Boris. Unfortunately, the press seem to be hung up on Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver.

Anyway, here are the lists I’ve seen so far. Pretty crap if you ask me, but as I pointed out in my last posting, it was a slow year:

  • Blender continue to fellate the insufferable Lil Wayne and inexplicably include Taylor Swift, but win points for including the Santogold mixtape.
  • Paste put She & Him at #1. I haven’t heard the album, but I’m told by my friends that have that it’s decent at best.
  • Q’s list is just bizarre.
  • My favourite music blog, Gorilla vs Bear, posted theirs today. Putting Erykah Badu (from Dallas, btw) at #3, officially makes this list better than all the others, in my humble opinion. Some of the stuff is a little obscure, but this being the internet, mp3’s are included.
Also, Lily Allen and Jay-Z have brought out new singles today. Lily’s is titled “The Fear” and it’s an irresistible bit of melodic electro-pop. No sophomore slump here. Jay-Z’s is titled “Brooklyn (Go Hard)” and following the lead of this autumn’s “Swagga Like Us,” it samples a line from a brown woman making utterly uncategorisable music: Santogold’s “Shove It.” It gets a bit repetitive, but the beat is hot. I think this augurs well for early 2009. We’ll be in a nasty recession but at least we’ll have some good new music. ;)
