Marilyn Roxie’s Top 25 Singles 2008

My personal picks for the best singles of 2008, and some comments on selected tracks (Ian posted his as well), since I have raved about a lot of these previously and feel I need to devote some space to those that I have not discussed as much. This was seriously hard to do, and there are still so many excellent tracks I have not yet heard (feel free to make suggestions in the comments)! All clickable songs/artists lead to the matching music video or live performance on YouTube:

1. “Bodysnatchers” - Radiohead: I am of the opinion that In Rainbows is the 2nd-best Radiohead album (the absolute best being Kid A), though reviews seem to be really mixed. It was between this and “Reckoner”, but I really had to go with this one just because I loved it right when I heard it, and it’s a really fun track for Audiosurfing. (In Rainbows is technically a 2007 release…otherwise it would have been on my recent top albums of 2008 list!)
2. “Last Day of Magic” - The Kills:
3. “Morning After Midnight” - Adam Green:
4. “No One Does it Like You” - Department of Eagles
5. “Ready for the Floor” - Hot Chip: Something to dance to…plus, it reminds me so much of a lost track from Sir Paul’s McCartney I.

6. “L.E.S. Artistes” - Santogold
7. “Human” - The Killers: ARE WE HUMAN….OR ARE WE DANCER?? Wins for that line alone, I’d say. Day & Age was a step up from Sam’s Town, though Hot Fuss remains my favourite. I think they are just one album away from achieving the greatness they’re destined for, but time will tell.
8. “Machine Gun” - Portishead: I’m really glad I don’t have tinnitus (ear-ringing) anymore, so I can enjoy this song without feeling like my ears are going to fall off…sorta. But, readers, play this back-to-back with Bloc Party’s Talon’s and it could happen!
9. “Lucid Dreams” - Franz Ferdinand: I am very excited for this album, they sound like they are back in fine form! Their single covers are always typographically sound, what’s more. (no official music video as of yet)
10. Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Not my favourite song on the new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album by far (it’s actually “Night of the Lotus Eaters”), as soon as I heard this and saw Cave’s new mustacioed appearance, I thought YES! HE’S BACK, AND THIS NEW ALBUM IS GOING TO BE AWESOMMMMMMEEEE. Or something like that.

11. “Courtship Dating” - Crystal Castles
12. “Ghosts” - Ladytron
13. “Viva la Vida” - Coldplay
14. “Caravan Girl” - Goldfrapp
15. “Brothersport” - Animal Collective: Okay, so this isn’t technically a single but it may as well be; Merriweather Post Pavillion is one of 2009’s most-anticipated albums, with a range of fake leaks taking place (*cough*namely on /mu/*cough*), one of which was a ZIP included nothing but different lengthed mp3s of the same song: Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”. I finally listened to the Collective’s Feels and I rather liked it. The cover trips me out, as well, though you have to look at it in just the right way…

16. “I Got Mine” - The Black Keys
17. “Blind” - Hercules and Love Affair
18. “Discipline” - Nine Inch Nails: May not be the official music video but, uh…yeah, The Slip is the best album from Nine Inch Nails in a while.
19. “Gamma Ray” - Beck
20. “Shiller” - Ratatat: All of LP3 sounds like a soundtrack to a movie that hasn’t been made, and this is an excellent, rainy and atmospheric opener. Ratatat are just getting better and better. (no official video available)

21. “You Bring Me Down” - Blood Red Shoes
22. “Mercy” - Duffy: I really liked this one, despite it being over-played. Though the rest of the album was too lightweight, alas; still so much untapped potential!
23. “Mercury” - Bloc Party
24. “Pork and Beans” - Weezer
25. “Shut Up and Let Me Go” - The Ting Tings
