Review: sundayschool - This Swan Will Break Your Arm

sundayschool are an alternative rock band out of London, UK, consisting of Chris (vocals/guitar), Robi (bass), and Omar (drums). They released two demos this year; Four Slices and the one pictured at left that I just finished listening to, This Swan Will Break Your Arm.

They describe their sound as “the Kinks being beaten up by Sonic Youth & Weezer whilst Pavement skate past nonchalantly and Smashing Pumpkins jot the whole scene down quietly from the corner”. And, while these influences can be detected in the very Britishness, noise-rock elements, jangly-ness, independent sensibility, and lyrically introspective nature of it all (respectively), there is plenty sundayschool have to offer which is a sound and lyrical craft that goes further than a blend of their inspiration, and is bound to grow to a greater extent in the future.

The first track on This Swan Will Break Your Arm ,”Little Happy Harmony”, is a bittersweet opener, with lyrics like “This world’s an unforgiving place” and “I know I need her more than she needs me”. My favourite track on the demo is far-and-away “Three Line Whip”, with Johnny Marr-esque guitar and anthemic vocals; a side of the group that I’d definitely like to hear more of. “Art” dissects the pitfalls of a trendy hipster mentality; “We’re so indie / We’re on EMI” “Did you see us on Top of the Pops?”. “I Think I’ve Played My Way into Trouble Again” shows the softest side of sundayschool yet, evening out the set. “Rest Assured” is the closer, another stand-out favouriite; 7:45 and feedback-driven, this is yet another fine example of sundayschool’s sonic diversity and adeptness.
