History of Rock, Part 3: Soul / Funk

In continuation with the ongoing History of Rock series that accompanies the workshop on the subject that I teach; see also Part 1: Blues, Part 2: First Wave of Rock

Today’s theme!
Soul / Funk
Topics, artists/bands, and genres discussed and played will include: early gospel music, doo-wop, early soul (Ray Charles, James Brown), Memphis soul (Booker T. and the MGs, Otis Redding), James Brown , Chicago soul (The Impressions), Aretha Franklin, Motown (Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations), and the development of soul’s influence on later styles of music such as funk (Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament, Funkadelic).

Again- comments are much appreciated, especially to share suggestions for topics, artists to cover, and potential homework assignments!
