Double Single of The Week- Sourdough and Yo Delay He Who

Phoenix, Arizona is a city that is often viewed by most, as a city without a thriving music scene. However I have found this view to be more of a false pre-obtained rumor for most. Upon forming my own musical project, I began to look for bands to play with and possibly open for. Being an electronic act proved hard, but I managed to find my niche opening for a couple of math rock bands. Although my music showed to be amateur, their music was far from.
These bands happen to be Chandler, Arizona’s “Sourdough,” and Glendale, Arizona’s “Yo Delay He Who, or Yo Delay Hehu.” Each band is a duo that consists of guitar and drums. Instrumental but catchy, both bands play in odd time signatures, and show a large amount of musical prowess; each musician having a lot of understanding of their instrument. Upon further research I was able to gather that, the pair will be releasing a split 7in later in 2009. So I thought why not give you a taste of their music right now, so you can have something to tide you over until the release.
Sourdough’s track that I have selected is called, “Wet Butter.” Wet Butter leads you through what appear to be the ups and downs of a single day, with a short chilled out intro, that then leads into a crescendo, then into what appears to be a call and response style verse, then into another crescendo, and about three minutes you hit some sick riffs and a plethora of time changes, then the song slowly and bitter sweetly winds down. If I had to compare these guys to someone it would be “Native,” and or “This Town Needs Guns,” minus the vocals.
Now it’s time for Yo Delay He Who’s track, I selected a minute long track by them called “Stop Pickin Your Lip Skin”. This song is short, sweet, and to the point, it really is a good song to give you an overview of how this band really sounds. Hovering just over one minute, it begins with some crazy atmospheric samples and then cuts to guitar and drums, then back to samples, into a crazy Mario esque breakdown. I would have to say Yo Delay He Who sounds a bit like original Hella, and a lighter Lightning Bolt.
What really rules about all this, is that you folks get these tracks for free, due to the generosity of both of these bands. Be sure to check out both of these bands on myspace and if you are in the Phoenix area, go to one of their First Friday Shows they rule!
