Fav Albums Week: The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone?

In this world there are few things that an individual can call flawless, however The Unicorns, Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone? is exactly that. When diving deeper into my musical psyche and developing my own tastes many groups, albums, and songs seemed to come and go. However The Unicorns have always been around, being amongst the first bands to truly inspire me to make my own music. The trio of Canadians were able to create a unique sound that i believe was far ahead of its time. Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone?, displays exactly that, beginning with a track called “I Don’t Want To Die,” and ending with a track known as “Ready To Die.” Ironic this band seemed to forecast their own doom, which is a shame for the large following they established, unfortunately, after their demise.

My personal favorites on W.W.C.O.H.W.W.G are Tuff Ghost, Jellybones, Les Os, I Was Born a Unicorn, and Tuff Luff. On the contrary the way this album is constructed every song is made to seem extremely AWESOME, as the album flows perfectly. Penner and Diamonds vocals mesh but also remain distinctive amongst Thompson’s hip hop influenced drums. Catchy choruses float amongst creative riffs, creating a world all its own. Although to many the band may seem like a mockery to the music business. I find The Unicorns to be one of the most revolutionary and influential indie bands of all time.

Unfortunately the band has now disbanded through to bitter differences, and substantial lack of fans during their existence. Thankfully for Unicorns fans though Diamonds, Penner, and Thompson have continued to make music. Diamonds founding Islands(sucks) and The Human Highway(Boring), Penner assembling Clues(awesome), Thompson also working on Islands and some random hip hop solo project that I can’t recall.

If anyone is curious as to the whereabouts of where to get info on all of the members, their new projects, and old Unicorns awesomeness check out the Secret Unicorns Forum. If you haven’t already, give the Unicorns a shot, after all they are probably my favorite band of all time and won’t disappoint.
